Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of neurocognitive rehabilitation therapy on hand function and task performance of ataxia patients.
The subject was a 51-year-old male inpatient in T-rehabilitation hospital in Goyang-si. The patient suffers from right hemiplegia caused by left pontine hemorrhage, and has consented to this experiment after being adequately informed.
The research was conducted from 1st October, 2019 to 1st November of the same year, and therapy was administered for 30 minutes at a time, five times a week, for four weeks.
The results of the study are as follows. Sensory damage assessment score improved from 9 to 13, while SARA decreased from 19 to 15.5, which suggests an improvement in ataxia. The results of MFT showed an improvement from 23 to 25 in the right upper limb, and MBI scores showed that there was an improvement in Activities of Daily Living scores (from 65 to 67 points).
In conclusion, neurocognitive rehabilitation therapy has been shown to improve hand function and daily activities of ataxia patients, and this study is significant in that it provided a method of administering the aforementioned therapy in a clinical setting as well as provides a concrete example of such administration.
